KeePass Password Safe

KeePass Password Safe is an open source password management utility for Microsoft Windows, with unofficial ports for Linux, MacOSX, and a variety of other systems.

FEATURES

Password management

Passwords stored by this application can be further divided into manageable groups. Each group can have an identifying icon. Groups can be further divided into subgroups in a tree-like organization.

Further, KeePass tracks the creation time, modification time, last access time, and expiration time of each password stored. Files can be attached and stored with a password record, or text notes can be entered with the password details. Each password record can also have an associated icon.

Import and export

The password list can be exported to various formats like TXT, HTML, XML and CSV. The XML output can be used in other applications and re-imported into KeePass using a plugin. The CSV output compatible with many other password safes like the commercial closed-source Password Keeper and the closed-source Password Agent, also the CSVs can be imported by spreadsheet applications like Microsoft Excel orOpenOffice.org Calc. Exports from these programs can be imported to KeePass databases. KeePass can parse and import TXT outputs of CodeWalletPro, a commercial closed-source password safe. It can import TXT files created by Bruce Schneier’s Password Safe v2. File format support can be expanded through the use of KeePass plugins. The HTML output uses Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to format the table, which makes it possible to change the layout.

Auto-type, global hot keys, drag-and-drop

Auto-type, global auto-type hot key combination and drag-n-drop support: KeePass can minimize itself and type the information of the currently selected entry into dialogs, webforms, etc. KeePass features a global auto-type hot key. When KeePass is running in the background (with opened database) and you press the hot key, it looks up the correct entry and executes its auto-type sequence. All fields, title, username, password, URL and notes can be drag-n-dropped into other windows.

Windows clipboard handling allows to double-click on any field of the password list to copy its value to the Windows clipboard. KeePass can clear the clipboard automatically some time after the user has copied one of his passwords into it. KeePass features a protection against clipboard monitors (other applications won’t get notifications that the clipboard content has been changed) and it has a paste-once functionality: allow only one paste operation, after pasting the clipboard is cleared automatically by KeePass.

Browser Support

The auto-type functionality works with all windows, and consequently with all browsers. The KeeForm extension allows to open websites withInternet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox and fill in user details automatically. For Internet Explorer, there’s also a browser integration toolbaravailable.

Plugins

KeePass has a plugin architecture. There are various plugins available on the KeePass homepage (import/export from/to various other formats, database backup, integration and automation, etc.). Note that plugins may compromise the security of KeePass, because they are written by independent authors and have full access to the KeePass database.

SCREENSHOTS

Go to KeePass download page and choose the file package for your system  (via Sourceforge.net) click HERE, then select your version and system architecture.

8 ways to detect malwares

If you want to detect a malware that is runnig on your computer, first of all, you should know what’s running on you computer. If you don’t now them, you won’t recognize something that could be a malware.

First of all, What is a malware? It is short for malicious software to intrude your computer without your consent. Malware includes computer viruses, worms, trojan horses, most rootkits, spyware, dishonest adware, crimeware and other malicious and unwanted software.

The most important thing to know the programs runnign on your system. These are some useful programs to detect processes on your system:

1. HiJackThis by TrendMicro - a procees explorer used to determine processes running on your system. program is notable for targeting browser hijacking methods – rather than relying on a database of known spyware. It scans a user’s computer quickly, and displays browser hijacking locations, showing what entries are there. HijackThis is used primarily for diagnosis of browser hijacking, as uninformed use of its removal facilities can cause significant software damage to a computer. HijackThis does not remove or detect spyware, it only lists most common locations where browser hijacking activity can occur. Browser hijacking can cause malware to be instituted on a user’s computer.

2. GetSystemInfo by Kaspersky - GetSystemInfo is used to detect incompatible software, applications, detect possible known and unknown malware residing on your machine, and also detect program function errors. GetSystemInfo is in development since 2007 and the latest version 4.0 includes many added new features that make the creation and interpretation of a users system easier to use.

3. Microsoft Baseline Security AnalyzerIn response to direct customer need for a streamlined method to identify common security misconfigurations, Microsoft offers the free Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) scan tool. It includes a graphical and command line interface that can perform local or remote scans of Microsoft Windows systems.

4. Anti-Malware by Malwarebytes – Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware is available in both a free and a paid edition. The only difference between the two versions, is that the free edition must be run manually, while the paid version can automatically perform scheduled scans. Both versions scan a user’s computer and remove malware if any is found.

5. SUPERAntiSpyware –  is a software application distributed as shareware which can detect and remove spyware, adware, malware, trojans, rogue software, worms, rootkits, parasites and other potentially harmful software applications, as well as restore modified system settings. It can detect malware, however it is not designed to replace an antivirus software.

6. Microsoft Process Exploreris a freeware computer program for Microsoft Windows created by Sysinternals, which was acquired by Microsoft Corporation.

Process Explorer is a system monitoring and examination utility and can be used as the first step in debugging software or system problems.

Process Explorer can be used to track down problems. For example, it provides a means to list or search for named resources that are held by a process or all processes. This can be used to track down what is holding a file open and preventing its use by another program. Or as another example, it can show the command lines used to start a program, allowing otherwise identical processes to be distinguished. Or like Task Manager, it can show a process that is maxing out the CPU, but unlike Task Manager it can show which thread (with the callstack) is using the CPU – information that is not even available under a debugger.

7. Secunia Scanning Inspectorsare the first internal vulnerability scanners that focus solely on detection and assessment of missing security patches and end-of-life programs – the result is an unprecedented level of scan accuracy. Scanning for missing security patches and vulnerabilities have never been easier or more precise.

The Software Inspectors are perfect supplements to Windows Update as they inform about missing patches for thousands of third party programs.

8. Microsoft’s Malicious Software Removal Tool – the tool runs one time to check your computer for infection by specific prevalent malicious software (including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom) and helps remove any infection it finds. Microsoft releases a new version of the tool every month.

Additional note: run them on a regular basis and make sure databeses are up to-date.

The Ilonggo local news

If you often watch the local Ilonggo news, you might have heard words that you can only hear in the news, or through your old friends and relatives, or from politicians. These words can be changed to new and common ones but they still use it. Anyways, it’s quite amusing. [Read the rest of this entry...]

Wolfram Alpha’s knowledge computation, impressive

Browsing through technology-related sites, I saw Wolfram Alpha, a computational knowledge engine created by the Wolfram Research Company.

The Wolfram|Alpha website (our “service”) gives you free access to broad computational resources, including powerful servers running complex algorithms at your request, large volumes of reliable and carefully curated data, and an innovative computation and delivery mechanism that provides you with expertly designed presentations and visualizations.

Green energy, renewable energy source.  In a battery? Hell no. Not until SunCat Batteries made it’s prototype of a solar powered battery. It’s obvious.
